Grand Master Fra' Matthew Festing's visit to UNOG on

The Grand Master meets the Director General of the United Nations Office at Geneva - 17th June 2011


The Director General of the United Nations Office at Geneva Kassym-Jomart Tokayev received Grand Master Fra’ Matthew Festing. Discussed during the long and cordial meeting were the Order’s programmes in acute humanitarian emergencies and the progress of recent initiatives in the African continent with particular reference to Sudan and Congo. Satisfaction was also expressed for the joint projects undertaken in the Balkans, in Africa and in Asia and for the intention to strengthen joint humanitarian interventions in crisis areas.

 

After the meeting there was a ceremony during which the Grand Master donated to the United Nations Office in Geneva a sculpture entitled “Compassione†by the Venetian artist Giorgio Bortoli.

In thanking the Grand Master, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stressed the universal nature of the compassion and commitment of the Sovereign Order of Malta and the United Nations to improve the living conditions of people worldwide.

 

Present at the meeting were Grand Chancellor Jean-Pierre Mazery and Ambassador Marie-Thérèse Pictet-Althann, the Order of Malta’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations at Geneva.

While Australia experienced record-breaking low temperatures this winter, the Order of Malta’s ‘Coats for the Homeless’ project has distributed its custom made coats to the nations homeless population who are unable to find shelter. Every day in Australia 100,000 people experience homelessness and almost 20,000 people sleep rough on the streets of towns and cities.

With independence, new challenges to be overcome in South Sudan On 9th July, South Sudan gained its independence and became Africa’s youngest nation. As the South Sudanese people start shaping their new country, the Order of Malta continues to help them along the way to a better future by training and qualifying medical staff. After 21 years of civil war, South Sudan is now faced with daunting challenges as it builds up its own government – and that is especially true when it comes to the healthcare system. The country has one of the highest infant and maternal death rates in the world: for every 1,000 live births, more than 100 babies and 20 mothers die. There is a great need for professional medical personnel to support disease diagnosis, surveillance and treatment.
